THE WOLVES MATCH
Back To Home Page
Date.......29th April 1967
Place.......Highfield Road Coventry

This was possibly the greatest and most memorable game ever to have been played at Highfield Road.
Coventry needed to win to have a chance of winning the Second Division title.Wolves needed to win to be virtually unchallengable due to a better goal difference.
The gates were opened extra early as a large crowd was expected.Jimmy Hill called it the game of the century, but it came to notice that the crowd would be much larger than it was first thought. The Police asked for the gates to be closed half an hour before kick off. When the teams came out the noise was the loudess ever heard on the ground.Wherever you looked you would see spectators, the were climbing up the floodlight pylons, sitting on the roof of the old stand on the west terrace. They had climbed over walls to get pitch side. The Police did a great job in keeping order and made sure people could see the game safely.
The match kicked off with Wolves attacking the Spion Kop end and took the lead through Peter Knowles, who would a couple of years later become a Jehovahs Witness.Wolves went in at half-time leading 1-0,Hill's boys came out for the second half with a great fighting spirit and within 15 minutes Ronnie Rees showed his skill and pace to set Ernie Machin to make it 1-1.
This opened the flood gates as the whole pitch was engulfed by a sea of young boys and older ones who got carried away with the moment. It took several minutes to clear the pitch and many fans may have lost a parent or friend and had to try and get back to their original place. Then stand-in forward John Tudor (in for the injured Bobby Gould) set up Ian Gibson
put City 2-1 in front, again fans invaded the pitch and the referee annouced over the tannoy that any more pitch invasions and the match would be abandoned.Tudor would witness more pitch invasions 5 years later as he would be in the Newcastle side that would be knocked out of the FA Cup by southern league side Hereford United.
Five minutes from time Ronnie Rees raced through and blasted the ball past Parkes in the Wolves goal. This time no one moved leaving the players to celebrate with each other. They did not invade again until the referee blew the final whistle. The crowd of 51,455 was given as the attendance a record that will not be broken as Highfield Road has gone to the great grounds in the sky but will always be close to our hearts. This game will the greatest game ever to have been played there for drama and excitment from 12 noon to 6pm on that day of 29th April 1967
