The season started with a win at home to Hull City with Dietmar Bruck scoring the only goal.Three wins out of four City looked on course to achieve their goal of reaching the first division, but a lack of goals were costing them dearly and by the end of October they had only scored three goals in a game once.Hill sold Pointer and dropped Ian Gibson who Hill had bought in the summer from Middlesborough, they had a row that was made public, both parties thought they were right. It made top headlines in all the national papers and the story went on for several weeks.
City went through a bad patch while Gibson was out of the side.Hill bit the bullet and put Gibson back in the side following a 3-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town.Gibson repaid him by scoring five in five and City would go on an unbeaten run from November 26th through to the end of the season(25 games),this still stands as a club record.
In December league leaders Ipswich Town got a 5-0 hammering at Highfield Road with Bobby Gould scoring his first hat-trick.City put another five past Portsmouth without the injured Rees and Gibson,a top of the table clash in March saw City travel up north to Ewood Park Blackburn where Gould scored the only goal of the game in a tence thriller.
Bobby Gould had scored 10 goals in 10 games and was in a hot streak of form.During this period he scored in front of The Match Of The Day cameras
at home to Bolton Wanderers,Bolton scoring right at the end with a defensive mistake from keeper Glazier.
But with only three games to go top scorer Bobby Gould got injured and would miss the remainder of the season,Hill called on another youngster John Tudor who had played several games during the season and scoring important goals so things weren't as bad as they seemed.
The first of the three games was a home game with local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers,Wolves were top of the table two points in front
of the City and with a better goal difference.
In front of a club record of 51,455 spectators City ran out 3-1 winners with goals from Machin,Gibson and Rees(SEE MY WOLVES MATCH PAGE FOR FULL DETAILS).They were not promoted yet.
Two games to go Wolves won their next game with the City only drawing away at Ipswich. This meaning Wolves needing a point from their final game with Crystal Palace to be Champions.City were at home to Millwall,at half time City were 2-0 up while Wolves were trailing 1-0,as City's games was nearing the end it came through that Wolves had been hammered 4-1 and with City winning 3-1 not only had they been promoted but they were Champions as well.
For those who were there they would not forget the scenes of Jimmy Hill in the main stand singing the Sky Blue Song and the spectators on the pitch beening held back by the local police force.
But during the close season Jimmy Hill dropped the biggest of bomb shells.
