After a mid-table position the previous season things had changed off the field with a new 'Sky Blue' stand,60,000 pounds in season ticket sales,a luxury vice presidents room,a annual soccer ball where sports stars and celebraties had an evening together at Highfield Road, and a brand new training ground at Ryton-on-dunsmore.Also a new tannoy system installed so the new sky blue radio station could be heard on match days,it played pop music and informed fans of local and national news.

The season got off to a good start with only 4 defeats up to christmas.
During December Hill splashed out 20,000 pounds and bought former England forward Ray Pointer.Promotion was well in sight when Pointer scored the only goal in a thriller at Wolves in front of 44,000.Even though they lost one of the next seven games City had drawn too many. But Hill dropped a bomb shell by selling George Hudson to Northampton and several fans even went to watch him play for them. But City had eight games during April winning only three,so this left them relying on other teams results.
The final game was featured on Match of the day it was at Huddersfield Town a game which City won 2-0 with Goals from Pointer and a young local lad Bobby Gould, who would end the season on five goals. It wasn't enough as Manchester City and Southampton went up and City one point behind in third place.Hudson still finished top scorer with 13 from 28 games,Pointer 11 from 19,Gould 5 from 17.City won 4 out of the last 6 with goalkeeper Bill Glazier returning after missing the whole season with a broken leg.He was due to be Gordon Banks's understudy in the 1966 world cup but his injury put pay to this.
Jimmy Hill believed new faces would be needed for City to reach the promised land. The next season was one not to forget.
