A new broom had swept through during the close season with many face changes, along with a new playing surface after the pitch had been levelled from old stand on Thackall Street side
down to the main stand.
A complete new forward line was introduced with included Terry Bly and Hugh Barr who were top scorers where ever they had been.
The first home game saw a crowd of 22,832 turn up compared
to the 7,500 that were there for the last game of the previous season against Hull City.Bly and Barr scored one apiece in a 2-0 defeat of Notts County. But they only won 5 out of the first
16 games and suffered heavy defeats at Watford and Swindon.
The turning game was a 1-1 drew at home to Northampton
when they went unbeated from October 13th to April 1st
This included an FA Cup run where they played Lincoln   on the 7th March,a game that had been postponed so many times
due to the bad weather of snow and ice it was played 2 months later than planned.City   won 5-1 then they played Portsmouth
and beat them 2-1 in a second replay at White Hart Lane .The
next brought a home tie with Sunderland who were running away with the second division.
The gates were forced open and many got in free, the attendance was given as 40,487 but it was thought that it was many more.Sunderland took the lead mid-way through the first half but with only eight minutes left a cross-come shot from Dietmar Bruck went in off the post and a mass pitch invasion took place.Order was quickly restored but within 3 minutes George Curtis scored with thunderbolt of a header
and the crowd went more wild than before. The referee made an annoucement over tannoy saying he would abandon the game if fans did not behave themselves. At the final whistle the
whole crowd engulffed the pitch, which was by now in a poor state due to the recent weather condtions.
A quarter final tie was played five days later with Matt Busby's
Manchester United being the visitors.Police made the game all
ticket after the events of the previous round,a limit was put at 44,000 just below the record attendence.
A packed highfield road saw the city take a early lead through
Terry Bly.But Bobby Charlton scored two to put united in front,Bly had a penalty turned down then he hit the bar with a rocket of a shot only for united to go and get a third they didn't deserve. So the cup ran came to an end and with a backlog of games city ran out of steam and could only managed fourth placeBut fans believe it could have been so much better because Hill dropped Terry Bly and replaced him with a new signing called George Hudson.Even with him scoring a hat-trick on his debut fans had there doubts and city only won one of the last seven games. So in season they had come so far , won nothing but had achieved so much success was just round the corner.
